Two centuries ago, a man was born whose ideas had fundamentally changed the comprehension of the phenomenon of life. A hundred and fifty years ago, his theory was published, inciting huge controversies whose intensities we sense even today.
In cooperation with Faculty of Biology, Museum of Science and Technology presents Charles Darwin, British scientist who had established the fundaments of modern evolution theory.
The display consists of intriguing exhibits presenting Darwin’s life and work, including Galapagos maquette, phylogenetic tree of humans, computer simulation of Darwin’s travels as well as quotations from this peer of science.
During the exhibition, a series of lectures named LIFE THROUGH DARWIN’S EYES will be held.

As a visiting exhibition:
· National Museum Kikinda, September 18th – October 3rd 2009
· National Museum Subotica, October 8th – 21st 2009
· Niš University, Faculty of Sciences, November 23rd – December 21st 2009.

More

Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12th 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. He was attending Medical school, which he soon neglected to prepare for the Anglican parson career at Christ’s College of Cambridge University.

In 1831 he accepted the invitation to serve as a naturalistat Her Majesty’s ship Beagle, which was sent by the British Navy on expedition for charting South American waters. During this voyage, which lasted for five years, Darwin became a true naturalist. Artifacts that he collected during the expedition had actuated his belief that different species evolved from common ancestors.

Later, inspired by the work of Thomas Malthus, economist, about the problem of regulation of number of human populations, Darwin started to define his view on natural selection, as the main cause of biological evolution. “Summary” of 490 pages On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life was published on November 24th 1859 and made Darwin both famous and controversial personality. Book was printed in 1250 copies, which were sold out on the very first day.

First edition of this book in Serbian was published in 1878 in Belgrade. Title was Origin of Species by Natural Selection, translated from the sixth English edition by Milan M. Radovanovic.
Darwin’s wealth enabled him to devote his life exclusively to the field of biology. Although chronically ill during most of his life, Darwin continued to read, write and discuss a number of topics, to rewrite Origin of Species, to conduct various experiments, especially on plants, and to publish many articles and books (… Variation of Plants and Animals Under Domestication, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals, On the various contrivances by which British and foreign orchids are fertilised by insects, The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilisation in the Vegetable Kingdom, The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species … )

Charles Robert Darwin died age 74, on Wednesday, April 19th 1882 at his home in Downe. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, next to the other English peers like John Herschel and Isaac Newton.
