This exhibition is organized on the occasion of the Museum day. On the same day is the 115th anniversary of the first public power plant in Belgrade (Serbia), which provided electricity for city center, for households and street lighting. On the spot of this first plant, in 51 Skender-begova Street, today is the Museum of Science and Technology.

The exhibition scene revives the city house ambient from the 1920ies. At the end of 19th century, home space structure as we know it today was defined. Home activities, which were later significantly changed and fulfilled in higher quality way due to electrification, are represented with 110 items from 9 Museum collections. These items are displayed to the public for the first time.

The exhibition catalogue reveals the period of early industrialization, which provided conditions for electrification of Serbia. The process of transformation and modernization of Serbia until the electrification would not be properly understood, neither evaluated, without comprehension of social history in general – political, legal, cultural and social, as well as without perception of ways of socio-cultural formations and transformations of the society. Heroes of this process are people whose social features, cultural particularity, way of life, habits and customs defined a speed and direction of this makeover.

More

Electrification is a process of introducing electric power to a general use.
Electrification in Serbia began in 1893, when, in October, the first public power plant producing direct current, started to work. That power plant illuminated today’s center of the city of Belgrade.

For city households in Serbia, the definition “on the eve of electrification” means from the year 1893 until the beginning of 1930ies. Until 1931, almost all cities in Serbia, governmental, industrial, educational and cultural centers were electrified. However, in private houses and apartments, the use of electric power was not affordable to everyone. In 1939, before the beginning of the Second World War, almost one third of households in Serbia was electrified. On the other hand, the electrification of rural regions went on much slower and lasted until the end of 1970ies.

The way and quality of family life in Serbia was much influenced by the development of technology that was achieved through many aspects – applying of new building materials; solving problems of plumbing and sewage system; applying of various inner lighting and heating systems; use of appliances and devices of various purposes in preparing food and maintaining personal and laundry hygiene, as well as while working and entertaining.
