After several decades of efforts to form a museum of science and technology in Serbia, on 6th October 1989 in Belgrade, upon the initiative of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and supported by twelve companies, the Museum of Science and Technology was founded. In December of 1990, the Republic of Serbia, upon the decision of the Assembly, took over all rights and obligations as co-founder of the Museum of Science and Technology. The first manager of the Museum, and, later, the long term president of the board of directors, was academician Aleksandar Despić.

One of the necessary steps in the protection of technological cultural assets was the formation of a network of technology museums and their information systems. On the initiative of the Museum of Science and Technology, the Association of Scientific and Technological Museums of Serbia was established in 1991. Today, through the Association, the Museum coordinates the activities of sixteen museums and permanent collections in Serbia. Since 1995, the Museum has been the official responsible institution for the caretaking of cultural assets in the Republic of Serbia.

Since 1997, when the Gallery of Science and Technology of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts was opened, the Museum has organized the agenda and activities of the Gallery and covers all phases of Gallery projects from conception, to technical realization, to media promotion.

In July 2003, the Museum of Science and Technology was pronounced as an institution that works for the general interest of the Republic of Serbia. The work of a group of enthusiasts that were gathered by the Museum at the beginning of its existence has grown over the years to become, today, the work of a business team of about twenty employed experts.

At the end of 2005, the Museum of Science and Technology received, by the decision of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the building of the first thermo power plant in Dorćol. While solving the question of the Museum’s lodging, the necessity for reconstruction of this building became apparent. Reconstruction is required to facilitate the complete, modern functioning of the Museum.

The project by Boris Podrecca for the reconstruction and upgrading of the building of the Museum of Science and Technology is financed by the National Investment Plan of the Republic of Serbia. It is planned that works should end in 2010.

Twenty years ago, on the proposal of Prof. Aleksandar Despic and with a decree issued by Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Museum of Science and Technology has been established.

In the evening of Friday, 28th of August 2009, with a ceremony that included the first public presentation of new Museum galleries, we celebrated our first two decades. The minister of culture of Serbia, Mr. Nebojsa Bradic, took the honor of the introduction speech and declared the opening of our new galleries.
